Theoria Sacra Undarum

The title of the piece, which means “Sacred Theory of the Waves” comes from Australian visual artist Harry Nankin who, through his technique of camera-less photography (creating ‘photograms’ or ‘shadow grams’), harnesses, natural forms and forces to directly create and control beautiful, dynamic patterns, in large forms.

This piece, harnessing a similar approach, is controlled by strict rules of voice-leading, but allows free develop and interaction, creating complex, dynamic, variable patterns. It is also an attempt at Grainger’s idea of “unforknowable nature music.”
